Why HR is important

Human Resources encapsulates many different aspects of a business, here at MunaHR we are most interested in four of HR’s key aspects; recruitment, onboarding, employee management and offboarding.

But before we get into one each of these four areas in more detail, let’s talk about why HR is important.

As a department Human Resources is responsible for the people side of an organisation; job advertising, hiring, training, managing leave, benefits and sometimes even conflict resolution. Employees are an essential part of any workplace, and HR is all about managing your employee's time in your business. As we all know, our people are at the heart of everything we do in our businesses and so it is crucial that we handle each step of their time in our organisations with the professionalism they deserve. HR ensures that a business can recruit and retain the right people while complying with labour laws giving both yourself and your employees, peace of mind.

Business leaders, such as Gallup, have long recognised the positive impact organisational culture has on a business. Creating a business that is structured around sustaining an engaged work culture has a trickle-down effect on all aspects of business, “Research revealed that business units and teams in the top quartile of employee engagement achieved higher performance on positive outcomes (customer loyalty, sales, productivity, profitability, wellbeing, and organisational citizenship) and realised fewer negative outcomes,” (Gallup’s Perspective on Building a High-Development Culture Through Your Employee Engagement Strategy).

We see then, that HR is about so much more than paperwork. Ultimately, HR is not only about getting the best people into your organisation, it is also about getting the best out of them.

Let’s break down one of the essential roles HR plays and why it is so crucial in the life of a successful business.

HR is responsible for staff recruitment. But there is more to it than simply hiring staff. Recruitment entails attracting the right person for the right position, ensuring that they suit the job requirements, but also align with the ethos of the organisation. Retention is another key part of the hiring process, and businesses with successful HR departments and stellar work cultures see less turnover. A part of this process is taking your new employee through the onboarding process, the term process is key here, because it should be a thought-out and systemised process to garner optimal results. This is your new employee’s first impression of the business and can determine the time in your organisation. Prioritising the smooth and effective onboarding of a staff member helps them to start off on the right foot, knowing what is expected of them and how they can achieve these expectations. This high quality of recruitment is the bedrock for implementing performance management and underpins the holistic success of your business.

HR is often seen as a chore, but good business leaders recognise its potential to be a driving force in their business, aiding in the successful management and the improved performance of their team. Don’t let HR fall by the wayside, prioritise it.
